The Adult Services program at spurwink|ri supports individuals with developmental disabilities. Our Adult Services program provides supports to these adults in a variety of living arrangements: residing in a supported living apartment, residing in a group home or living with family. Adult Services also provides specialty supports and services to our clients. Included are individual and group counseling services, medical and nursing supports, psychological and psychiatric assistance, and occupational, physical and speech therapy.
It was not very long ago that adults with developmental disabilities had very few opportunities available to them. At one time, the individuals that the Adult Services program supports were not able to live at home. They were often sent away, some for the majority of their lives. Society had a variety of stereotypical perceptions and attitudes about these adults. Sadly, some of these stereotypes still exist.
It is the mission of spurwink|ri’s Adult Services program to assist in eradicating these perceptions by providing our adults with individualized support, tailored to help them to live their lives as independently and fully as possible. In doing so, we help them find their own voices, make their own decisions, and take control of their lives. The outcome for these disabled adults is a fulfilling life of meaningful work, friendships, marriage, and community involvement such as, attendance at church services, the ability to vote and participation in other socially enhancing opportunities.
